On examination, X-rays indicated soft tissue swelling around the patella (knee cap) otherwise known as house maids knee, and a large swelling behind the knee (popliteal fossa). The was also pain around the left hip and swelling below the iliac crest.

On osteopathic examination there was stiffness and pain around the joint margin and peri patella bursal effusion that was extra articular.

Treatment consisted of Osteopathic mobilisation of the knee joint and lymphatic drainage. Osteopathic manipulation of the lower back and hip traction was also applied to aid in relieving the swelling (bursitis) and promoting movement of the joints, loosening of the muscles and increasing blood flow to the muscles.

Acupuncture was also applied for both pain relief and to decrease inflammation.

After both Osteopathy and Acupuncture treatment, the patient felt more mobility and less pain on walking.

Associated-Conditions

A 66 year old patient presented to the clinic with a history of chronic Raynaud’s Syndrome and Scleroderma. Symptoms were predominately of pain and cold extremities.

On examination, X-rays indicated advanced degenerative spondylolitic (arthritic) changes of the cervical spine, loss of disc height and some compression of the central spinal canal.

On osteopathic examination, the spinal areas of the cervico-thoracic region were fixated and hypertrophic. The muscles around the scapulo-thoracic region were fibrotic.

Treatment consisted of Osteopathic mobilisation of the spine to aid in promoting movement, releasing nerve compression (neuritis), loosening the muscles, increasing blood flow to the muscles.

Osteopathic manipulation of the cervico-thoracic region of the spine helped to reduce pain in the arms and hands and reduce the feeling of cold in the hands.

A 35 year old patient presented to the clinic with a history of chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis, with periodic phases of exascerbations of sweliing, pain and tenderness of the joints. The wrists, knees and spine were all involved during the flare up of symptoms.

On examination, X-rays indicated mild degenerative changes to the joint margins of the distal radius and ulna. The knees also showed irregularities at the condylar region of the femur and joint effusion.

On osteopathic examination, the joints were hyper mobile and the paraspinal muscles indicated an increased tonus and were fibrotic.

Treatment consisted of Osteopathic mobilisation of the spine to aid in regulating the autonomic nervous system, and articulation of the joints to ease the pain and inflammation of the tendinitis (tenosynovitis) of the wrists. Acupuncture was applied to regulate the neuro-endocrine system, and specifically for pain relief, to aid circulation, ease muscular tonus and reduce fluid retention. Osteopathic manipulation of the cervico-thoracic region of the spine help reduce pain in the arms and hands.

HORMONE IMBALANCE | MENORRHAGIA, DYSMENORRHEA and DYSFUNCTIONAL UTERINE BLEEDING

Acupuncture began before 2500 BC in China and is now used all over the world to treat disease and pain, to improve general health, and even as an anesthetic. Metal needles are applied to certain points on the body, and the overall purpose of the treatment is to bring the (female principle) and (male principle) back into balance with one another.

A 18 year old patient presented to the clinic with a history of abnormal rhythm in their monthly cycle.

All pelvic examinations with Ultra-Sound were negative.

The patient complained of heavy painful periods, with clotting of the blood. The period of the bleed would last for seven days. She would also experience fluid retention and pain below the umbilical region.

Psycho-emotional state of the patient; Impatient, disappointed with herself, under stress, sad, anxious, holding stuff in, breathing problems, mood swings.

All these symptoms coincided with a road traffic accident a year ago, where the patient was hospitalised, in shock, suffering with amnesia.

Osteopathy and Acupuncture look specifically into the causation of symptomatology. There are a pluralism of factors that are involved in ‘driving a symptom pattern’, and it is in the body i.e. the musculo-skeletal structures where we find the root problem of the symptoms. In this case, there we many asymmetries and musculo-skeletal blocks of the cervical and thoraco-lumbar segments of the spine.

Treatment consisted of Osteopathic mobilisation of the lumbar spine to aid the outflow of the autonomic nervous system to the pelvic organs. Acupuncture was applied to regulate the neuro-endocrine system, to aid circulation, ease muscular cramps and reduce fluid retention. Osteopathic manipulation of the cervical spine to aid thyroid and parathyroid function as a mediator for hormone balance.
